Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
"Quite simply this is an excellent book. It is well-written, with snatches of dry humour. It should be mandatory reading for anybody who keeps a dog or has intentions of so doing." —R. W. F. Poole, Daily Telegraph

How do dogs perceive the world about them? How do they see, hear, learn, relate to their owners? How large are their brains, what is their emotional makeup? Why do they suffer from stress and how can it be coped with? Over the last few years a substantial body of knowledge has been built up about the psychology of dog behavior. Combining more than twenty years of practical experience as a veterinary clinician with a personal knowledge and understanding of the latest international research, Dr. Bruce Fogle has written the most inclusive and relevant book on how the canine mind works.

4 out of 5 stars good information, but nothing new   May 18, 2009

I expected this book to be a little outdated because of its age, and it was. many of the ideas he states have since been proven wrong, such as the fact that all dogs see only in black and white. He did have some good information and thoughts on dog behavior and way of thinking, which is why I gave the book four stars. This book would be better for someone who doesn't know much about dog behavior--and I would recommend skipping the chapter on the biology of the dog's brain. I learned a few interesting tidbits, but after working with dogs for several years now and studying them extensively, I found this book contained little I did not know. Recommended for beginning and intermediate dog handlers and owners, this book has the basics and a little more, but I would not consider it an exhaustive reference on dog behavior.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books about dog behavior   April 14, 2009

Saturday Dogs...and the owners they trainedTo get a practical, step by step understanding of how dogs think, and how to use that knowledge to have a relationship with your dog, get "Saturday Dogs......and the owners they trained", by Susan Overfield. She is Montana's dog whisperer, and has been at it for 38 years, quietly changing dog after dog, owner after owner. Overfield gets dogs, and she gets people. And she does something traditional trainers don't---she guarantees her results. Overfield trains using a relationship based, dog centered method. She is Montana's own dog whisperer. She has trained rescue workers, breed groups, herding dogs, hunting dogs, dogs of every stripe, age, color, and personality. Her book is a delightful series of anecdotes which illustrate her method and how dogs think, using actual examples of dogs she has trained. The name of the book comes from her popular Saturday classes. Overfield trains around the country privately. She does fundraisers for rescues and shelters, and she also is acclaimed for speaking to large groups, including animal based trade groups. She writes like she talks, which is smart, witty, and unvarnished truth. Pick this book up here, or at her website: [...]. Watch the video. She is for real.

Very well written. Understandable to the lay person who wants to better understand canine behavior and an excellent addition to any Veterinarian's bookshelf. Full of usefull tidbits of information to review all those long past vet school classes. The theories proposed and discussed are enlightening.

I recomend reading Grandin's book they go well hand in hand.

4 out of 5 stars Great Insights!!   September 22, 2008
comic guru (Kendallville, IN)
I know that some people think they know too much and that this book is useless, and not full of very many insights, but these same people must not realize that this book wasn't published yesterday...it's an older book. Information like this was invaluable because you couldn't just google information on dog behavior. The United States has been reinvented twice since this book has come out and with all this new technology, we also have new insights into dog behavior and psychology that are not covered in this book simply becasuse they were not yet known. What this book DOES do is give timeless truths as to the way canines think...their pack mentality, early learning, later learning... Bruce Fogle covers a lot of ground in a short amount of space leaving you just curious enough to keep exploring more of what you can learn about the dog's mind. With that in mind, understand that while this is a great book, it is incredibly boring at parts. Especially when reading about the brain and physiology of the dog's mind. The introduction is the length of a chapter in itself...and I'm not kidding. My suggestion is to get this book, read it, take notes on it, pick it apart and google each of the topics such as the dog's brain, hormones on the dog's mind, fear, phobias, etc. and learn what Fogle has to say and what has been discovered since the publishing of this book 16 years ago. If you're an animal behaviorist like me, this book isn't a suggestion, it's required reading. Enjoy reading and learnig about the dog's mind!
