Amazon.com Review
With its pouty, cartoonish eyes, floppy ears and perky little tail, the The Rescue Pets Swim to Me Puppy is practically irresistible. But it's more than a pretty face: this battery-operated puppy not only walks by itself, but it also starts to swim when you put it in water. This fun toy provides plenty of opportunity for imaginative fun for kids aged 3 and up.

Children will love the dog's cute face and perky tail. View larger.

What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Battery-operated puppy is easy and fun for children to use

The Bad: Makes very loud mechanical noise; requires some positioning to float properly in the water

In a Nutshell: Battery-operated puppy can walk and swim on its own, providing opportunity for fun, imaginative play
At a Glance

Ages: 3 and up
Requires: Three AAA batteries, small Phillips screwdriver
A Steady Walker
The Swim To Me Puppy has a hard, hollow plastic body and head, with floppy rubber ears. While its hard shape is not terribly cuddly, it's perfect for the water. It requires 3 AAA batteries, and you'll need a smaller-sized Phillips screwdriver to install them.

Once the batteries were in, we found it easy enough to make the puppy walk. Simply press the heart-shaped button until its legs start to move, then set it on the ground. The puppy wobbles along at a slow, walking over flat smooth surfaces as well as softer surfaces, such as a rug or sofa, although some bumps can sometimes make it lose its balance. It sure looked cute toddling along, but this puppy makes a very loud mechanical noise while it's moving -- a sound that we soon found rather grating while, of course, our test child remained delightedly oblivious to it.

A Natural in the Water
The puppy has two small sensors on his chest. To get it to "swim," immerse the sensors in water, and its legs will start to move. Although the toy's instructions say that the dog will start to "doggy paddle," it simply just makes the same walking movements it does when "on land." But that doesn't detract from the fun -- the puppy will float in the water, and its leg movements propel it through the water at a steady, if somewhat slow, pace. We found that certain adjustments helped keep the puppy floating upright: first make sure that the water is deep enough so that it's actually floating, rather than simply walking on the bottom of the bathtub. For best results, submerge the puppy's body until bubbles stop forming, to fill him with water and help it balance better. Otherwise it will tip too far forward. And it's best to position it with its face halfway submerged, so it does not tip back too far. If you attend to these details, the puppy will "swim" as far as you'll let it.

Of course, if your child is playing in a bathtub, the puppy won't get very far. And while the toy's instructions indicate that the puppy is not recommended for use outside, we think its swimming action would be a lot more fun in a body of water larger than your standard tub. Be sure that children have constant adult supervision when playing in or near any water, indoors or out.

The toy needs a little bit of care to make sure it continues to run properly, including making sure it's dry when playtime is finished. After our play session, the battery compartment had a bit of moisture inside, so make sure to dry your toy inside and out to prevent battery corrosion.

I guess we are not the only ones stuck with ths crappy toy. Built VERY poor! Once ours went in the water it would not shut off!!!!!!! So sad because my daughter loves it and is sad it won't turn off. We basically had to take out the batteries because it will not shut off. She still carries it around! What a JOKE, for [...]...biggest waste of $$$$ ever!! DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP!!!!! It's sad to see your child so sad over a toy that will not work right!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Poorly made toy, disappointment!   September 4, 2009

My daughter HAD to have this toy. Unfortunately I didn't read reviews on it until recently, after we had already purchased it. The toy does not swim as advertised and does swim as most people have said- face first into the water. That isn't even the biggest complaint though. What happened to us also seems to be a common issue with others - once it was on, we couldn't get it back off unless we removed the batteries (which is VERY hard to do while the legs are moving). So I finally called the customer service department and they told me to remove the batteries, clean all the metal parts with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol & leave to dry for a full 24 hours. To my surprise, this actually worked! Although it has only been a couple days, we'll see how long it lasts. In summary, I definitely would not buy this again & I would not recommend it either... it caused my daughter & myself a lot of aggravation :(

Have to constantly charge the batteries for this toy or change them. Doesn't stay afloat in water very well. Needs improvement by the creator!!

My four year old really, really wanted THE RESCUE PETS SWIM TO ME PUPPY for her recent birthday. I read all of the negative reviews about this toy, and really wasn't sure, but she convinced her Paw-Paw to get for her. She knows what she wants and is a great little salesman. And do you know what? We were all very pleasantly surprised. THE RESCUE PETS SWIM TO ME PUPPY works exactly as advertised.

First of all, this all plastic puppy is very cute. His big, adorable eyes, long, floppy ears, and a sweet expression have won my daughter's heart. Place him on the floor, turn him on, and he will walk around the room, following my wee one. He is slow, but can manage the transitions from carpet to tile to hardwood and back again with no problem. The SWIM TO ME PUPPY just keeps going until he encounters a wall or some other large obstacle. You do have to remember to turn him off so that you don't waste the batteries.

Next, we took the SWIM TO ME PUPPY to the neighborhood pool. You don't even have to turn him on in the water. My daughter placed him in the pool, and the two sensors on his neck detected the water, and he immediately started swimming around. My little one squealed with delight! Now, you do have to let him fill up with water so that his ballast is right and he swims correctly, but that takes just a few seconds. Once he has his balance, he swims and swims. We kept THE SWIM TO ME PUPPY in the water for quite a long time (30 minutes or so), and he kept going. When we finally took him out of the water, he stop almost immediately, once the sensor stopped detecting water. Perhaps it took about 5 seconds. My child lovingly dried him off, but it was not necessary for THE SWIM TO ME PUPPY to turn off.

All I can say is that THE RESCUE PETS SWIM TO ME PUPPY works perfectly for us. My daughter is absolutely thrilled with it, and I am extremely pleased. THE SWIM TO ME PUPPY has helped my wee one overcome some of her fear of the water. She will mimic anything he does. Because of THE RESCUE PETS SWIM TO ME PUPPY, her swimming is improving every day. We have had THE RESCUE PETS SWIM TO ME PUPPY for several months now, and he is still going strong.
