Well Made to Save Your Home November 17, 2009 S. Faulk (Sacramento, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I looked at several brands and types of crates for my soon to arrive Doberman puppy before deciding on this one. I was considering a soft crate as an option but after I spoke with a few people who had their puppy chew right through them I decided that would be a bad choice. I couldn't see a reason to have multiple doors so I decided the single door Midwest seemed like the best solution for me.
I purchased a size he can grow into when he is older because even as an adult my dogs use a crate for a peaceful area of rest and safety. Most crates now days do come with a divider and the one that comes with this crate works well but it will take a minute or two of wrestling with it to put it in place. Although this crate is a larger size is was very simple and quick to set up and is plenty sturdy. The door opens, closes and locks smoothly. The tray in the bottom is easily removed if needed and the crate doesn't rattle or shake. It is not a crate you would want to pack on a trip due to the weight and size unless you had a BIG motor home but for home use it is perfect. The dog bed that Midwest offers for this crate is a good option and seems sturdy enough for the money (we have washed in three times in a few weeks with no wear and tear).
I would just like to close this review by reminding anyone that is considering crate training to PLEASE do it! Your dog will be happier, you will house break him/her quicker and you will be able to control the time you have to watch your best friend so they don't get into anything harmful that could cause serious injury.
Easy to Assemble, Easy to Clean November 13, 2009 Bryan Carey (Houston, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have owned a few different dog crates over the years and most of them have been made from heavy- duty plastic construction with a closed design that included only a few open spaces from which a dog can see through to the outside. These types of crates certainly have their use, and they make a good choice when you need a crate for transporting. However, if you need a crate for general containment at the home, an open design is better because it allows the dog to see everything clearly, without the barriers. The Midwest Life Stages Single Door Folding Metal Dog Crate offers this open design, allowing a dog to see his/her family and the world around him/her while safely contained inside the crate.
Looking at the specifics of this dog crate, one can clearly see that it is made from metal construction with a plastic tray that slides through the bottom of the crate, to catch waste. There is a single door, located on one of the ends of the crate, with two locking latches to keep it shut. To lock, you simply lift the latch, slide it to the right, through the slot, and then lower it. The only way to undo the latch is to perform the same action in reverse. The latches seem a little flimsy, but a quick check will show that they are secure. It takes little effort to lift the latch and slide it, but I doubt many dogs would be able to figure this out and it isn't likely to happen by accident. Even if it did, it would have to happen twice for a dog to escape, since there are two latches securing the door.
The wire design of the Midwest Life Stages Single Door Folding Metal Dog Crate is safe and secure. It is strong enough to easily keep your dog within its grip, yet the wires are thin enough that they do not obstruct a dog's view. This dog crate also comes with a divider, making it ideal when you have multiple dogs or when you have a puppy that will eventually grow into a larger breed. Dividers are helpful with a small puppy because they make the dog's home space smaller, which means the puppy will be less likely to have an accident. Dogs generally do not like to soil their living space and then lie down in it. With a large space, a dog is more apt to make a mess because the dog knows it can avoid the mess and sleep in a dry area. With a smaller space, dogs will not have much free area and thus will try to stay clean until a family member lets them out.
The Midwest Life Stages Single Door Folding Metal Dog Crate folds for easy storage and there are two plastic handles that can be snapped into place to make transport even easier. Cleanup is easy too, thanks to the plastic tray that slides out from the bottom, even when the door is closed. It can be sprayed off or wiped clean without any disassembly of the unit.
Dog crates are important when you own a dog and the Midwest Life Stages Single Door Folding Metal Dog Crate ranks as one of the better ones I have owned. I like the ease of assembly, the simple folding and unfolding design, and the ease of cleaning the slide out tray. This crate isn't super- strong and some parts at least give the perception of weakness. But this is a solid, sturdy crate from Midwest Designs and it's a device I recommend for simple dog containment.

it's pretty practical and easy to carry around. our dog (jack russell terrier mix)loves it- or at least has to- since we're training him.
good purchase and price was good. other places were asking more for it.

Great Price! I price shopped around for a while. I got this cage at a better price than if I had bought at Walmart and it was delivered to my door. Huge Cage for our Doberman!
