5 out of 5 stars No time to train   March 9, 2009
S. Jones (Wichita, Ks)
As a busy single father of three, I was wanting to train our new labrador puppy. I am one who has little time and sometimes little patience. "Water dog" gives precise training activites and also tells you at what age in a dogs life these activities need to be taught. The training activites are simple and take only minutes a day to do. I was surprised by how fast our pup caught on to what we were trying to teach him.

This is a great video and trust me, neither you or your dog will be dissappointed by the results, if you just apply what is taught on the video!

1 out of 5 stars Painful to watch..Buy the book   February 13, 2009

I have never reviewed a product that I have bought on Amazon before, but I feel compelled to help save those who follow the "movie is better than the book" mentality on this one.
I have read Water Dog the book numerous times. It has to be the best training manual for labrador retrievers on the market, even though it was written about 30 years ago. That being said; I figured that since the book is so amazing, the video would be able to provide some additional, visual insight b/c the book's pictures lacked in clarity. I couldn't have been more incorrect. I feel ripped off. I watched the first 15-20 minutes or so and had to turn it off b/c it was so annoying....and this is coming from a trainer(me) who greatly appreciates any useful information that can help perfect my art.

You might ask, Why is it annoying? To be somewhat respectful to the creator of this video, the main actor lacked the presence to deliver an effective message...that was put very nicely... Also, to reiterate, you will learn nothing more in this video than you learned from the book. That is, unless you do not understand how to speak to a dog or are not familiar with what a dog looks like, etc....... For example, there is about a 1 minute section of this video that shows you how to tell a puppy to "Be Quiet". This minute consists of "the actor" teaching us how to say the word "quiet". The other lessons were nearly as useless and the previously mentioned.

If you cannot stand to read the book, and feel you must learn from a DVD, buy the 'retriever fever' dvd series. I have watched the advanced volumes of this series in the past, and I currently own the 'Puppy' edition. Although a little pricy, it is very much worth the money...if you don't want to read Water Dog.

5 out of 5 stars Water Dog DVD   October 7, 2008
First time lab owner (New Brunswick, Canada)
Excellent DVD, it walks you through the training process from the puppy stages to a well trained retriever. I watched the entire video the first time and have gone back to view sections that pertain to the particular point in the training process I happen to be working on mastering. I also purchased "The Hunting Retriever" which complemented the DVD well.

This is truly the best training guide for my waterfowl and upland retriever. It breaks the training into short, 15 minute steps and tells you exactly what to do to have a really excellent sporting dog, as well as a dog for the family and around the house!!

4 out of 5 stars Good summary of the Dog Training Process   July 16, 2007

This is a good summary of the natural dog training process. The only thing I thought it was missing was a troubleshooting section. But, all of the DVD's I have watched have lacked in this area.
On the whole this is a very good guide on how to take your dog through the training steps but I would definitly recommend a book to go along with it.
