Product Description
At last! A kids-and-dogs book for parents written by someone who "gets it."

This is a wonderful book. Useful, useful, useful information—all the main points in an extremely easy-to-read style. As a trainer and a mom, Colleen sees the full picture." — Dr. Ian Dunbar

Living with Kids and Dogs . . . Without Losing Your Mind by Colleen Pelar, CPDT, covers more than introducing a baby to the family dog. It has chapters devoted to each stage of a child’s life with parental pointers for setting their family up for success while raising kids and dogs together.

~ Parenting books say control your dog; dog-training books say control your kids. The reality is far more complex and goes way beyond placing blame on either children or dogs for being who they are. ~

Living with Kids & Dogs . . . Without Losing Your Mind provides busy parents with simple, realistic advice to help ensure that the relationship between their kids and their dog is safe and enjoyable for all.

You will learn how to • Help your child and dog develop a strong relationship, built on trust and cooperation • Set your family up for success with a minimum of effort • Recognize canine stress signals and know when your dog is getting worried about normal kid activity • Identify serious behavior problems before someone gets hurt • Provide specific help for managing the interactions with dogs through each stage of your kids’ lives from infancy through the teen years • Prevent your child from becoming part of a growing statistic—children who have been bitten by a dog.

5 out of 5 stars Trust her advice; she knows what she's talking about.   September 2, 2009
Micah Judd
Having never owned a dog and having four children, I think this book was a great beginning to our new adventure - life with a dog. This book is a short, easy read. The author's approach to dog ownership is modern, meaning she uses a lot of patience and repetition in training, no hitting or force (with children or dog). I gained some simple understanding of dog behavior as well as basic training techniques, with which I'm having success. I find the author's advice to be very sound. Being new to the world of dog ownership and having had children in my home for 9 years, the attitude of some childless dog owners toward children has not escaped my notice. The author's unique perspective of being both a loving mother and a loving dog owner is a great advantage to her readers. And yes, now that I have a dog, I can see how my previous attitude toward doting dog owners lacked experience. It is difficult not to treat a dog like a child. I do wish I would have read her book before I ever agreed with my family to get a dog. I would have done two things different: I would have helped my 4 year old become more acquainted with dogs months ahead of the time the dog came home and I would have waited until my 1 year old was at least 3.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for parents and dog-owners   March 24, 2009

This is a great book for any parent who has or would like to have a dog. I am a mom of 5 great kids who begged and begged for a dog. I had very limited experience with dogs before we got our Golden Retriever. This would have been a great book to read BEFORE bringing our pooch home, but it has lots and lots of great advice for those of us who already have both kids and a dog.

I believe what makes this such a great book is how realistic this woman is about raising children. She has three boys of her own and recognizes that "don't let your child pester the dog" is much easier said than done! The chapters cover all ages of children and her advice is stated with an understanding that none of us can control every aspect of our kids' or our dogs' behavior. So - we must do everything that is realistically possible to encourage the best from both of them.

4 out of 5 stars Generally helpful, generally...   February 28, 2009

With competition on the way (see: baby) for our dog, this book was an obvious purchase. We are happy with the book and it's advice, but it is very basic and for the most part common sense. One of the best parts of the book are the summarizing bullet points at the end of each chapter.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Any Family Getting a Dog   December 8, 2008

As a breeder, I recommend this book to all of my clients...even those that just have grandchildren, or nieces and nephews visiting. Good little training tips as well as really great information to help the adults monitor the dog/child interactions to keep everyone happy. So often people just buy traing books for their dogs, ignoring the fact that half of the battle is training your children how to understand the canine body language, and how to behave around the dog!

If you have kids, please read this book. Getting a dog is a long-term commitment. Do it right from the start, and you will have a happy and loving family addition for many years to come! Good Luck :))

I would highly recommend this book. It is well written, funny and very helpful. The book was recommended to us at a time when we were concerned about one of our dogs and the principles outlined in the book were extremely helpful. A great resource!!
