Excellent book, based on sound behavioral psychology principles. The best part, however, it is very practical and WORKS!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for your library.   April 12, 2009

I'm a veterinarian whose practice is limited to behavior. I also do quite a bit of speaking about behavioral issues. I think I've read virtually every comprehensive companion animal behavior book currently in print. This book is the one I recommend for everyone's library--particularly those who want to start with only one book. It not only gives advice on basic behavioral techniques, it also lets the reader understand the theory behind how they work. It's written in a way the rankest beginner can understand--but even those of us with lots of experience can find a few new things to learn or good reminders of what we already know. Everyone with a critter (or who's thinking about one) needs this book.

Well written book. Easy to follow. I would recommend this book for all dog owners as well as trainers and veterinary staff.

This is truly an excellent book. It was recommended by our Veterinary Healing Arts doctor as we have a highly aggressive dog who we will NEVER be put to sleep at 6 years old and would rather work with him to make him a happier, healthier dog @ home. He is currently taking Prozac, a new "Puppy Prozac" called "Reconcile" which we use in conjunction with the book and his treatment plan. I highly recommend it even if you're not seeing a doctor for your dogs behaviors because it gives some wonderful tips that really help you regain more control over your dog.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book   February 20, 2009

I am a practicing veterinarian who has done many behavior specialty rotations and this is one of the best books I've read. I reccommend it to my clients regularly. It is not just another "training tricks" book. It actually helps you understand how your pet learns and how your actions can affect their behavior. I believe it helps foster the human-animal bond should be read by all pet owners and care-givers.
