The Best Yorkie Book July 24, 2009 Kristin King (Port Orange, FL USA) I am a first time yorkie owner so before I picked her up, I read five books on yorkies to better acquaint myself with the breed. Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies was by far the best! It was humorous, informative, and most of all, it made me appreciate my beautiful, smart puppy. I learned some great tips on training and my pup has already mastered some basic tricks. If you own a yorkie, you should own a copy of this book!
Basic information July 15, 2009 C. Reynolds Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies is a very basic book. Most of the information contained in this book can be found on the internet. There is specific Yorkie info for people who are willing to search the internet, save and or print it out. This basic book is for those who want to have basic information in their hands when needed.
great May 17, 2009 Jonathan F. Hoffman (USA) great book, esspecially good for information about what breeder to look for. could have some more information such as using baby food for 8-10 week puppies who should eat baby food when they won't eat after you first get them.
Don't be afraid to do the wrong thing with your Yorkie...she's probably smarter than you!! April 16, 2009 J. Guild (Toronto,Canada) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have had mine for nearly three years.I saw this book ,so I picked it up to see if I could learn anything, see if I had done the right things,or what I might have done differently.
Well,to start with,my little friend in not a pure breed. She is what is called a "YorkiePoo".By the way, from reading this book you would never know she exists.I guess when you get down to it,she and I break just about every rule in the book. Her mother was a 9 bound standard Yorkie and her father an obviously randy, 3 pound tan Teacup Poodle. Bailey ended up being about 7 pounds ,dark grey, with some white on the throat and paws, some very slight traces of tan on head. She has the face and head shape of a Yorkie, and the typical hair of a Yorkie. However ,her ears ,including hair, hang down rather than erect. The book does not mention eyelashes, but Bailey's are nearly 2 inches long, and melt your heart.
We have had dogs ever since we were married in 1960,and they were always as much of the family as the 3 kids. We started with a Cocker Spaniel, then a chocolate brown Daschund, both pure breeds. Our next was a mix ,a "Lassapoo" About 4 years ago,we lost the Lassapoo;the kids had married and now had their own kids and dogs;we were starting our 70's so figured that the time for a dog was behind us.
One day,my wife was reading the paper and saw an advertisement for "Yorkiepoo" pups. She called ,and was told they were all spoken for,but gave her name with the possibility getting one from the next litter. The breeder owned the Yorkie and her daughter owned the Teacup Poodle. About a week later ,we got a call, and were told that the breeder had brought the puppies to the city and two people who had agreed to buy pups, didn't show up. Were we still interested? After reading this book ,and all that it entails;this sure looks like a perfect setup for disaster. Anyway, off we went ,saw the puppies and in 15 minutes....we chose one,and we were on our way. This all happened so fast that we ended up in church ,with the puppy in my wife's bag. We sat in the back and the puppy slept peacefully throughout the service.
Maybe we were lucky, because Bailey has turned out to be a perfect part of our family. We realize ,that at our ages;there is a good chance she might outlive us;but our daughter would welcome her into their home in that event.
Bailey continues to amaze me with how smart and adaptable she is. She loves companionship, gets along well with the other 14 dogs we meet on our daily walks, and everyone loves her as does she them.
She has her own bed in the kitchen at night, but during the day has the "run of the house"; often sleeps upstairs on our bed when we are out.I read a lot, and whenever I am in my favorite chair, she lies beside me.Sometimes she sits on a chair at the table and gets the odd treat, but is patient and not a bother. She doesn't pester others for treats,as she knows that I'm her sugar daddy. We have had both pure breeds and mixed dogs;and I think there is a lot to be said for the mixed as pets. There seems be less chances of problems of overbreeding or whatever;and they don't seem to be as high strung.
Well,as you can see,I didn't follow every rule in the book.It is filled with good advice;but don't let it bother you if you don't follow everything to the letter.
These little dogs make excellent pets, and really want to become friends with you.If you give them lots of love and attention they will return it many times over.
I think a good thing to remember is that they are probably much smarter than their owners and it's up to you to figure them out.
Remember ,it only takes money to buy a good dog;but it takes love to make it wag its tail.
GREAT BOOK April 13, 2009 J. Mitchell (CHARLOTTE, NC United States) VERY GOOD BOOK FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN YORKIES, SIMPLY WRITTEN, VERY EASY TO FOLLOW, WELL ORGANIZED.
