My husband, son, and I all love this book! The rhythm is so catchy that you can instinctively sing it. During all the "I love you" parts, I sign "I love you" along with singing it. Of course, there are lots of opportunities for hugs and kisses throughout! Other positives: Variation in loud v. whisper, bright colors, and large easy-to-see print for running your finger underneath to show a child the words.
This is a book that my toddler son will hand me to read all the time.
Boynton is a first-class children's author; other classics include "The Going to Bed Book" and "Barnyard Dance" (my son got a hoot watching me do each part of the dance, and now he likes to bow and spin.) Her humor, art, and sing-song writing have made us big fans.
Favorite Sandra Boynton Book October 15, 2009

My 11 month old daughter likes most of the Sandra Boynton books, and this is our favorite. It was one of the first books that I read to our daughter, and she was instantly mesmerized. We hadn't heard the song's tune at that time, so we made up our own. It is still a favorite bedtime song, even without reading the book. My daughter would sing along at 6 months and start woofing as soon as I opened the book- it was too funny! We found that music was a great way to introduce reading to our young infant.
I will always buy this book for new moms, along with B is for Bear- Roger Priddy, another early favorite of ours.

I learned this book and song in a rather unusual way... My middle daughter is an elementary school music teacher and her Kindergarteners were putting on a program. My daughter had them all bring stuffed dogs for the performance and they sang the song to their own "snuggle puppies". It's just an adorable song, and if you don't know it, you need to get the Philadelphia Chickens book and CD, which of course you can find here on Amazon:

So now that you know the tune, you can sing the song to your little one as you read them the book!! This book depicts the unconditional love a parent has for his/her child, and will be a FAVORITE for years to come! This book is great to read to babies and toddlers, but preschoolers and even older children will enjoy singing the song and acting out the words with their own "snuggle puppies", aka stuffed friends!!
I love all of Sandra Boynton's board books, but this is one of my granddaughter's all-time favorite books!!

This is the first Sandra Boynton book we had ever purchased. We didn't listen to the record beforehand, so we sing it to our own melody, a bit more upbeat with a nice long, loud howl! This is a simply wonderful little book and the sentiment is right on the money. I agree that this is a nice little valentine from you to your kids, whether you're Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, or third cousin twice removed.
I can't recommend Sandra Boynton books enough. All of them we have read so far are sweet, clever and fun. Whichever one you choose, you can't go wrong. But, "Snuggle Puppy" is still our favorite.
(I wanted just to tell you, and it didn't take long, that you should add this to your baby's collection. You and yours will love it too!)
