5 out of 5 stars Simply Great!   August 17, 2009
C. Walter (Eden Prairie, Minnesota)
I am a very firm believer in training your dog in whatever area they were bred for, as it makes them so happy to do their job! Reading through quite a few books on training a dog to hunt, I was disappointed that so many authors believed the only way to teach your pup to retrieve to hand was through force fetching, which is something I am not willing to do. Wolters has a much more natural approach to hunt training that I really respect and appreciate. This is a great book, with clear direction and a fun tone! I can't wait to get my new puppy to start working! Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   January 27, 2009

This is a great book for anyone training a RETRIEVER to upland bird hunt. We hunt with another dog and it is very clear where her training was lacking and why she has the hunting issues she has thanks to this book. I trust with the help of this book, we will be more successful training our puppy in May. We had also read Gun Dog which though the more famous of Richard's books, is more geared towards pointing breeds.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ for Lab lovers !!!!   October 5, 2008

Attention amateur dog trainers. Going to buy a Lab pup? Buy this book first and start off right. If you don't, you and the pup both loose. Richard Wolters sets the "high water" mark for all other training books and videos combined. You can leave everything else on the shelf. This stuff works. Wolters tailors his methods towards the amateur dog trainer/hunter for real world situations in the field with wild birds. He takes you from the 8th week of the pup's life through his last days on earth. He utilizes facts gathered from dog behaviorists and applies them to the development stages of a pup measured in precise numbers of days. Very easy to read and comprehend.

This is an old book but it is still the best system out there for training labs. Wolters has it together.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic start for a puppy   November 12, 2007
Harold J. Dickerson
I liked this book to a cetain extent. I think this is a good book for someone who doesn't know a lot about a hunting dog. It's geared more towards starting with a puppy, but can be used with an older dog. I'd read it before I got the puppy so you know what to expect. It's a little light on specifics, but there are some there. Don't get too caught up with the time line because all dogs are different.
