Book Review June 10, 2009 Samuel Thursday This is one of the best, in my opinion, of the many introductory training manuals out there. Very well written and very essential to your library. The book and dvd combo is worth a lot more than the asking price. Highly recommended to any dog lover by a dog owner and trainer.
Practical, Positive Book Enhanced With an Hour Long DVD June 10, 2009 John McPhee This straightforward book is clearly written, illustrated and comes with a useful DVD that is well organized. Many of you may already be familiar with this couple's earlier books particularly their highly regarded standard contribution to the field, Good Owners, Great Dogs. Read it too. But Smart Puppy is also one of the best puppy books I have read. The positive reward system is one I find works well and is humane.
The 60-minute DVD is terrific as long as Sarah Wilson is on screen and fair to very good when Brian Kilcommons is teaching. I am sorry to report a discrepancy because I respect his knowledge so much but he uses the medium less effectively. He could show us what he says! Why not do it? Ms. Wilson does. But his contributions are still quite rewarding. The one thing you should be warned about in an otherwise good experience watching the DVD is the not quite ready for prime time vet selling us, the captive audience, the same products ad nauseam that no doubt paid for the DVD production. We did not have positive associations with those products by the end of this DVD. But that is a minor complaint. The DVD allows you to see the advice in action and observe the dog's behavior in the various stages of compliance and persuasion. In my opinion it added value and an exceptional additional kind of experience that complements reading the book without adding any noticeable cost. You just have to endure the nice but slightly dull doctor and his all too frequent commercials. We began to consider raising ticks and fleas during the second viewing. It was just a moment. It passed.
Fantastic Book! June 3, 2009 M. Pearson (Colorado USA) This book is a "must have" for anyone wanting to train their dog! A fun and easy-to-read format makes this an ideal tool for training. Lots of examples and stories to help you. Everything is set up so that you go from teaching very basic commands and build upon them to the more advanced. They don't just tell you the "how" but also the "why" of doing it. They also address many problem issues (such as biting, barking, digging, etc.) and how to work at resolving them. The DVD is great and demonstrates the training so explicitly that you can't mess it up. I think the most difficult thing is retraining myself to avoid using the word "NO!". It's all done with one and two word commands as well as your body language with LOTS of praise and treats. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone with a new puppy (or, better yet, get it BEFORE you get the puppy so that you can start from day 1).
The BEST puppy training book May 28, 2009 Ginger in Los Angeles (Southern California) I've read several puppy training books now that I have a new chihuahua puppy, but this book by far was the best! The Kilcommons know their stuff and present it in a way that makes sense and makes training your puppy fun. The DVD is excellent, also. I highly recommend it to anyone with a new puppy!
P.S. June 23, 2009- My puppy is now almost 5 months old and people are amazed at her excellent behavior! I owe it all to the teaching and DVD from 'My Smart Puppy'. She sits on command-always! She has learned not to jump up on people and we are now working on the 'down' command. She's really My Smart Chihuahua! This book was priceless for learning how to train my puppy and how to do it in a manner that made sense and was FUN.
Let me mention also that my puppy learned housebreaking almost immediately. I used a crate and I also used indoor piddle pads which are hospital mattress pads instead of regular piddle pads. They're washable, soft and my puppy picked right up on the housebreaking idea. Available at medical supply stores and a little pricey, but they last for years so the initial output was well worth it. I'm very happy with My Smart Puppy!
Better than all the rest! May 18, 2009 Sally Philpot (Huntsville, AL United States) After buying many other dog training books, this one was highly recommended to me by a friend who trains service dogs. She was right, this one includes a DVD that SHOWS you how to do the exercises, exactly what to say, what your body language shows. My dogs learned quickly afterwards, once I knew how to teach them. We weren't having any luck and it wasn't the dogs, it was the trainer. I love the book and DVD. It's the first and last dog training manual anyone ever needs to get!
