Product Description Dogs have always been our friends and changed our lives for the better. But they may save our lives as well. Seamlessly weaving scientific research with compelling narrative, Paws & Effect tells incredibly moving stories of beloved pets who have supported their people through periods of ill health and other crisesâwith miraculous results:
*Little Ben, a Chihuahua who can sense impending epileptic seizures
*Abdul, a Golden Retriever/Lab mix, who was the worldâs first service dog and helped his owner by retrieving keys and phones, medicine from countertops, water from the refrigerator, and could even hand in credit cards at the grocery store
*A Dalmation named Trudii, whose obsessive behavior prompted her owner to seek a medical examination that revealed melanoma

Paws & Effect October 19, 2009 Suzanne B. (Memphis, TN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read this book about 2 years ago. The book caught my eye, as I do love to read about the amazing bonds that animals and humans do have, as well as the great help dogs can be to some people.
Once I read the section about raising puppies that would one day become guide and/or assistance dogs, I became fascinated. I immediately began researching different organizations that train these dogs, not even realizing there were so many! Since then, I have raised one puppy for the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, NY. Now I am raising one for C.H.A.M.P.s out of St. Louis, MO. I didn't even know this was something that people do, I never even considered how these dogs were raised and trained, so it's been great to learn something new as well as having the opportunity to see how these dogs come to be guides/companions.
This book sparked a whole new chapter to my life. I am thrilled to be able to be a part of this. I get to have the loving hugs & kisses from a pup while raising it to be such a big help for someone! I immensely enjoyed this book, along with the new little friends we have had in our home. This book will teach you a lot you might not have known about dogs, as well as fill your heart with so much joy!
How dogs can heal humans September 29, 2009 Helen Hancox (Essex, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This was a very enjoyable and interesting book. It weaved some scientific information alongside narratives of different people whose dogs have made a difference to their lives - and their health. We are all familiar with guide dogs but this book showed many other ways in which dogs can help those with disabilities or other problems, such as dogs that can detect the onset of fits, that can sniff out cancer, that can provide warmth to those with specific pains, and more.
The book was well written in that the individual stories of owners and their dogs were engaging and the reader got a flavour of the relationship between pet and owner. My only criticism was that the book left me feeling that every dog probably had some fantastic healing benefit and when I look at my aged and naughty Weimaraner sprawled out on the bed I just can't see it in her. But perhaps she is just waiting for the opportunity to show her special talent!

This book will stay with you August 11, 2009 Sharyn Hutchens (Virginia) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Those of us who love dogs know that special connection dogs have with people. Put a few dog owners in a room and the stories flow -- the way she knows when you've had a hard day before you walk through the door, the way he instinctively tones down his rambunctious nature when a toddler comes in the room, the way she seems to read your mind when you're thinking of going for a car ride. But Sackson's research reveals an even stronger bond than we imagined.
A few of these dogs and people we may have heard a bit about: the dog who detected cancer and saved the life of his mistress, the first woman who trained assistance dogs, the military dog whose handler defied the odds to have his canine partner flown to NC from Iraq. But Sackson tells these stories well and her research fills in the details we hadn't heard before.
Most of these dogs, though, are previously unsung heroes, and their stories will stay with you long after you close the book. Captain, the whippet puppy who resisted all overtures until he found a boy who also couldn't relate to anyone else. the numerous Westminster champions whose "real jobs" are offering comfort to people in rest homes and hospitals, the one-eyed Brussels Griffon who couldn't be trained but somehow passed his therapy dog test and knew what every patient needed when he visited children in the hospital.
Like another reviewer, I did not plan to read this book straight through. With chapters complete in themselves and no characters to follow from one to another, Paws & Effect lends itself to episodic reading, what I call a "car book." I carry them around to pass the time while waiting in a doctor's office or stuck in a serious traffic jam. But I was hooked after the first few pages and read it straight through like a novel.
It's hard to write about people and dogs without being maudlin, or at the very least, trite. But Sharon Sackson's writing style is warm without being sugary, her words don't get in her way, and any tears you might shed while reading this book are shed honestly.
I'm looking forward to her next one!

Paws & Effect was an amazing read. I usually don't choose books like this, but I am glad I did. Very insightful and looking forward to Sharon's next book! If you are recovering or going through an illness, I would highly recommend this wonderful read.
