Amazon.com Review The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy. The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery puppies will pull at every heartstring.
Product Description he Monks of New Skete have been involved in every facet of dog care for over 25 years: breeding and raising German Shepherds, training dogs of all breeds, and counseling dog owners on the many aspects of life with their dogs. What sets their program apart is the monks' compassion, respect, affection, and understanding of canine behavior and how they incorporate that into their training.
In The Art of Raising a Puppy—over 250,000 books sold since 1991—the brothers tell you everything you need to know about the crucial first months with your new best friend. From the decision to adopt a pup through the process of finding a dog breeder, preparing for your pup's arrival, succeeding at house-training and preliminary obedience exercises, and building the foundations of training, they offer clear guidelines for raising a puppy and establishing a lasting, loving relationship. This is an essential source of wisdom, information, and inspiration for anyone who has a puppy or is considering bringing one home.

My "Bible" for Puppy Training! November 17, 2009 T. Parbs (Veradale, WA United States) I've raised 4 German Shepherd pups and this is hands down the best book out there for puppy training. Don't think twice about buying this--get it! You won't be sorry!
There's so many books out there on puppy training, but this one is the one you want. Very easy to read and understand, and has many great pics. The Monks of New Skete used to breed and train German Shepherds. Their techniques are spot on and simply WORK!
Grab this book!!!
If you want a good dog, buy and apply this book! October 28, 2009 Montana Grandma (Helena, Montana) In preparation for getting our last puppy 10 years ago we signed many books out of the public library and found that the Monks of New Skete books and methods are the best! We have bought everything they've written on dog training, and trained that last dog with some of their wise techniques with great results. Now we have a new puppy and are applying their techniques even more. They work! If you want a great relationship with a well behaved dog who is truly your friend, buy "The Art of Raising a Puppy" and "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend". There are also DVDs available that supplement the books. Praise and relationship is used instead of bribing with treats.
A must have for the new puppy owner! October 27, 2009 Holly A. Jackson (Hilliard, OH USA) I'll keep this short. If you own a puppy you MUST own this book. It's a wonderfully entertaining read. Better yet, buy it BEFORE you buy your puppy. Your puppy will thank you for it!
Great Book! October 19, 2009 M. Mbugua (Atlanta, GA USA) This book was really informative and well written. I just got a german shepherd puppy recently and I keep reading the book over and over - truly amazing! I want to purchase the other book that they have written. Well worth the price (I bought used).
Required reading for all dog owners September 20, 2009 Erich (Western Slope of Colorado, USA) This book should be required reading for all potential dog owners regardless of breed, owner age or if you've owned a dog before. Clearly written, easy to understand and sensibly presented. The information in this book will give you good insight on how your puppy's mind works, what your puppy needs from you and why the puppy behaves as it does. Save yourself a lot of grief and aggravation in dealing with easily resolved behavior problems. If you read this book and implement it's suggestions your dog will grow up being a better companion and you, a better person. Remember, there's no such thing as a dumb dog - only dumb owners.
