Product Description Every dog owner must make a choice: Do you want a fearful and submissive pet, or do you want a happy, joyful, and well-mannered member of the family?Tamar Geller's mission in life is to teach her cruelty-free method of "life coaching" for dogs and their people. Her revolutionary play-training uses mutual understanding and respect -- and puts an end to outdated methods that rely on physical exhaustion, choke chains, prong collars, dominance rollovers, or stressful aggression of any kind. A former Israeli intelligence officer who witnessed the horrors of military dog training methods, Tamar went on to observe wolves in the wild. She discovered that wolves educate and socialize their cubs with games, bonding, and body language, not dominance or punishment. As a result, she developed teaching systems that address a dog's authentic nature, part wolflike and part toddlerlike. Learning can be a positive experience that dogs enjoy and look forward to, and we can actually make it fun for our dogs to listen to us and behave as we want them to. Tamar's insights have brought dog training into the twenty-first century, and her groundbreaking techniques have won the approval of the Humane Society of the United States, for which she is a longtime advisor. Her celebrity clients include Oprah Winfrey, Ben Affleck, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Owen Wilson, and the Osbournes, and she has appeared as an expert on the Today show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Animal Planet, and more. In The Loved Dog, Tamar gives you all the instruction, insights, and tips you need to teach your dog good manners, as well as to troubleshoot specific problems and unwanted behaviors. She helps you and your dog learn a common language, resulting in a loving, respectful relationship that will bring you years of joy and companionship. Tamar's play-training approach is so gentle, even children can get involved. Whether you use Tamar's methods to raise a puppy or teach an old dog new tricks, you'll love The Loved Dog.

Wish I would have known about this sooner! August 18, 2009 C. Quino (Texas) You know the adage - You can't teach an old dog new tricks. That's no necessarily true, but it is harder. I wish I would have stumbled upon Tamar's fantastic line of all natural dog food at HEB way sooner than I had, because that little trip to the grocery changed the way that not only my dog eats, but how I go about her training. A couple thousand dollars later on aggressive training and behavioral manipulation - my dog came home a scared robot that was afraid to have a personality! I LOVE her personality; the playfulness, tug-o-wars with my socks, etc. Those are the moments that add levity to the seriousness of life and isn't that why we have companion animals anyway? Tamar's book is filled with useful tips on how to respectfully (for us and them) change the learned and patterned behaviors that we love to think we have nothing to do with. SO much of the book sheds light on how we are self-sabotaging the training and being unclear to our pets. She adds light-hearted anecdotes and real life stories between the advice. I'd love to have her come to the house and work on some trouble spots with my Great Dane. That would be an awesome bonus! Pick this book up if you are tired of hearing that your dog is just bad - that's ridiculous! It takes time, patience, and an introspective look at ourselves to identify where we are making mistakes...Tamar helps us get to those epiphanies quicker!! Thank heavens!
There are much better training books out there August 8, 2009 Elaine Mensa (Chicago) There is nothing new in here, and it is not presented in a helpful fashion. The author talks more about herself than dog training. She has no new insights to share. It seemed to me after reading this book that the only reason it got written is to put the pretty author on the front cover. It also confused me that the introduction was by Humane Society of the U.S. president. He said "her teaching is in line with our goals." HSUS stated goal is to end pet ownership, which they describe as enslavement. How is having a trained dog in line with their goals? Curious.
For someone seriously interested in dog training, you need Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor, one of the Monks books, The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell and then a positive step by step training guide by Andrea Arden or Cesar Milan or Pat Miller. I would also throw in Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs by Sharon Sakson, which shows you how far you can get if you bond with your dog and learn to understand him.
[...] June 25, 2009 Mary L. Jacobs (Huntington Beach, CA USA) This is an excellent starting point if you have a new puppy or are looking for a way to make an old dog behave better. I had to deal with both problems when I brought a new dog home. I did hire a trainer and this followed most of his guidelines, so if you need to try something on your own before going to that expense this is a good place to begin. I was looking for a little more about controlling a barking problem and this only had one reference for it.
The Loved Dog - The Playful, Nonaggressive Way to Teach Your Dog Good Behavior by Tamar Geller June 22, 2009 Lynn Shade (Cogan Station, PA USA) What a great book to use as a reference when training your puppy! I have used many of the ideas presented in the book and have been amazed at how my mini schnauzer puppy responds. It has been a positive experience. He is the perfect gentleman. I have recommended this book to many friends and family members - and I even purchased a second copy to give to my sister. An easy but very worthwhile read for puppy owners.
great book June 22, 2009 Ami L. Biggs (Michigan) I would recommend this book to any dog owner. Very quick and easy read, with alot of useful information on how to train your dog. I like Tamar's way of teaching good behavior with a playful and positive training.
