treat your man like a dog.... by Maia Madden August 14, 2009 M. Winer (Kentucky) I DO NOT OWN A DOG NOR AM I A PET LOVER, BUT I STILL FOUND THAT MAIA MADDEN'S BOOK WAS A DELIGHT TO READ AND MUCH MORE PROFOUND THAN THE TITLE WOULDT SUGGEST. THE AUTHOR USES HER OWN LOVE AND DEVOTION TO HER DOG, AS A METAPHORE FOR UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, FORGIVENESS, KINDNESS AND LIVING IN THE MOMENT. IF ONLY WOMEN COULD ACT WITH THOSE SAME FEELINGS TOWARDS THEIR MEN, AND OTHERS THEY LOVE, THEY COULD LIVE HAPPIER AND MUCH MORE FULFILLING LIVES. THE BOOK IS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND PROVOKES THOUGHT AND EXAMINATION OF THE READERS' OWN BEHAVIORS TOWARDS THOSE WHOM THEY LOVE. WHO OF US HAS NOT BEEN IRRITATED AT THOSE WE LOVE FOR SOME MOSTLY INADVERTENT INFRACTIONS, I.E., CLUTTERING, NOT HELPING WITH CHORES, NOT KNOWING WHAT WE WANT, NOT BEING ATTENTIVE ENOUGH, ETC.? IN RETROSPECT, WE COULD HAVE ALL DONE BETTER THAN OVERREACTING TO THESE UNINTENTIONAL PROVOCATIONS. HAD WE DONE THAT, WE WOULD HAVE ALL BEEN HAPPIER AND MORE FULFILLED. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO FOLLOW THE WISE ADVICE OF MAIA MADDEN IN HER PRIMER FOR SUCCESFUL RELATIONSHIPS THAT WOULD LEAD TO GREATER HAPPINESS AND ENJOYMENT OF LIFE.
Clarity July 20, 2009 Veronica Damico (Santa Cruz, CA United States) I don't own a dog; it doesn't matter. Ms. Madden displays a concentrated awareness of her own experience and that of her friends. The reality of her observations benefits many, including myself. I felt myself blush more than once as I read and internalized her keen and insightful quips. I thank Ms. Maia Madden for her startling clarity of which my husband shall benefit!
What a wonderful idea! July 17, 2009 Arthur F. Walker What a wonderful idea! Take how a woman treats her dog as a metaphor, not (as might be expected) of how she should NOT treat her man, but of how she should treat her man. The author shows great humor and a wonderfully loving attitude as she delves into all the applications of her metaphor. Speaking as a man, I loved it.
Good advice even for those who don't own a dog.... July 13, 2009 Karen Potter (Santa Cruz, CA) It is always a 'good' reminder to be told to love, appreciate, forgive and find time to play with those you love, especially with your beloved partner but Maia doesn't lecture or scold. Maia imparts this truth in a very fun and playful way filled with personal anecdotes from her own life and from her fellow 'doggy' friends. A perfect, light summer read to pass around under your beach umbrellas!
A relationship primer for a happy connected life July 10, 2009 Randall Sparks (California USA) Maia Madden has beautiful insight into human relationships that she has related to her lifelong love of dogs. This relationship is easily understood to all from our own past experience and love for any animal. All animals, and especially "Fido" (Which stands for "Fidelity") is an unconditional love that stems from a dogs standpoint of living in the moment and also, that happiness is the natural state of being.
All persons could learn from dogs in that the amount of time we spend rehashing the past and wishing for the future would be better spent accepting our relationship in the moment, and the better our future would be if we did. "The actions and thoughts we have today create the world we live in tomorrow". "If we lived in the present moment, we would recognize most arguments for what they are: foolish displays of ego that waste precious time and leave Ill feelings and lingering resentments in their wake" If you squelch an argument before it explodes, you are freeing yourself to enjoying the present.
Dogs add positive energy to the world and happiness is the natural state of being. Instead of asking what's wrong with your partner and remembering what was wrong in the past in your marriage, ask yourself what is right and hold optimism in your heart. Like attracts like. "If you focus your thoughts and actions on what make you happy, you will have more and more to celebrate."
While these concepts are obvious and straight forward this book lays them out in such a way as to make them easy to understand and thus easier to follow for the long run, especially if you have an animal (Fido) in the home to remind you. Take a lesson from your animals, "Treat your spouse like your favorite animal and live happily ever after."
