4 out of 5 stars Great gift   May 3, 2009
Cynthia Clarke (Rochester ,NY)
Because my daughter is due to have her first baby in the next four weeks I have been re-immersed in the world of a mom-to-be. Wondering what it will be feel like and the fear of the birthing process fill nearly every conversation. So when the opportunity was offered for me to review a book of birthing stories I did so with my daughters needs in mind.

The book, a collection of sixty stories written by real moms, is very much like reality TV. Not polished, lightly edited, and true, in a raw, honest way, kind of like chatting over coffee with a friend.

There is however one common thread running through its pages: Do not expect birth to go according to your plan because it very rarely does. The stories of early births, intense labor or babies being born in the hospital corridor all speak of the unpredictability of bringing our children in to the world.

Although I would have preferred a collection of beautifully written stories, this book will satisfy the need that all expectant mothers have to hear as much as they can, as often as they can, about the experiences of those who have gone before them. And that, after all, is the intended market. As Ms. McMeekan-Cates says in the introduction, "Stories about babies being born never interested me, that is until I became pregnant".

Just in time for Mother's Day this book would make a lovely gift for the woman just beginning her journey toward motherhood.

I was given this book at my baby shower 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it. The stories are funny and made me laugh nonstop. As a 2nd time mom, I still love hearing stories from moms because it is simply fun to listen to what others have been through during labor. This was a great gift and I just bought 2 to give to co-workers who are pregnant. They are both first time moms and we talk about birth all the time so this is the perfect gift!
