Product Description Laura and her husband delivered their first child without the aid of a doctor or midwife. Laura alone delivered the next three children, assisted by her belief that giving birth was a natural process for which a woman's body had been well designed. Shanley's birth experiences, combined with subsequent research, have confirmed her belief that with the proper mindset, delivering one's own baby is the safest, most fulfilling way to give birth. Shanley gives numerous references, both historical and contemporary, to support her theory. She tells of her own experiences in childbirth as well as those of other women who have given birth without medical assistance. Although many contemporary writers deal with the concept that we create our own reality according to our beliefs, Shanley is the first to fully apply this to the birthing experience.

Every expectant mother should read this book September 5, 2009 Naomi A. Chipel (Cranston, RI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If I had not read this book while I was expecting my 2nd child, I never would have had such a satisfying birth. Thank you, Laura.
Pretty good encouragement August 22, 2008 Laura K. Spilde (Iowa,) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is really good encouragement and does an excellent job of sharing the real facts about the problems of medical system. Whether you actually plan on an unassisted birth or just want information about the truth, this is a good book to have in your library. I was somewhat distraught at her bias against Christianity, but I can understand that she was opposed to the religious practices and not to the spirituality concept behind Christ.
Courageous, a giant step for womankind! May 18, 2008 Toniaann Smith 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I expected an author who was more polished but found one who was human just like the rest of us. This put us on the same level. She gives us information to increase our faith in the bodies God gave us and points out that our bodies were built to give birth. She has radically altered my views. I had had some exposure to UC via assorted websites, but this answered things I didn't know enough about to ask. This book opened my eyes to my own birthing experiences and helped to heal them. This may not be much help in helping you choose whether or not to buy the book, but I believe every woman needs the information in it. We are not guaranteed to give birth with professionals around us and if it happens by chance that we are alone, we need the knowledge and confidence to not freak out. Fear causes pain which causes terror which causes agony. So much better to be prepared even if you are choosing an assisted birth.
Rediscovery of Birthing Truths March 8, 2007 Julie A. Semmens 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I appreciate Unassisted Childbirth immensely, and have read this book several times since purchasing it a few weeks ago. Laura has been able to capture and expose birthing truths that in our hearts we've always known to exist. The author reminds us of the power, beauty and pure genius that is engrained within the human body - including that of the laboring woman, and uses her personal experience with unassisted childbirth to enable women to recognize and utilize the power of their own minds and bodies in childbirth. I highly recommend this book for all expectant mothers!
The best source for real, logical pregnancy and birth advice. June 28, 2006 S. Smith 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I loaned this book to my mother who literally yelled at me and threatened me with force when I told her I would be having a doctor-free home birth. After reading this book, she was totally changed and supportive of my choice. This book is crisp, clear, and a quick read. It clearly explains the risks of medical intervention in pregnancy and birth and the amazing benefits and pleasures of birth the way is was meant to be. I went on to read some of the books in the bibliography, but this book truly did an impressive job of giving all of the important information, and I could have done without the other books.
