Useful book and practical DVD for first time puppy owners November 19, 2009 R. Moorthy (New Jersey, USA) This book is a good complement to these authors' other book "Great Owners Good Dogs" (that is an EXCELLENT book, by the way). This is more recent and up to date although not as complete. The DVD has some good demonstrations that we, as first time puppy owners, found useful, although experienced owners would not (and probably not need the book anyway). I agree with another reviewer's comment about the sponsored products being a little too heavily visible and promoted, but I guess that is the price one pays for effectively, a "free" DVD. Overall, a useful book and practical DVD for first time puppy owners, I would recommend it (along with "Great Owners Good Dogs")
Not enough "Here is what you do..." September 28, 2009 MaggiesMom (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very excited about getting this book, because the reviews on here seemed pretty good. When I started reading, I was quite disappointed. First of all, many pages are dedicated to the authors' own experiences -- which is fine if I were reading for entertainment, but not when I'm reading to figure out how to train my new puppy.
The biggest downfall of this book, however, is the layout. Whenever you finally think you are getting to a part that will teach you how to train, the book says, "And for this type of training, see later in the book." The entire book references other parts of the book over and over again, so it's pretty much flipping back and forth and back and forth. When I finally figured out some of the training tips, my dog did not react in the way that the book said she would -- and we were both stuck.
Frankly, I gave up on it and am buying a different book.
My Smart Puppy: Fun, Effective, and Easy Puppy Training (Book & 60min DVD) Review September 13, 2009 Angela M. Horton (Atlanta, GA USA) I have used this book and DVD a long while back when my dog was a puppy and I got this book along with some other training tools. They came in handy and I have taken my dog to training lessons also in the meantime.
Extensive Help for New Puppies September 12, 2009 D. C. Winters (Ypsilanti, MI) Before getting our first new puppy in ten years, I purchased several books to prepare. This was one of the best. I really appreciated the DVD that came with it, as it provided additional support to the techniques found in the book. The style of writing was honest, with the authors sharing some of the issues that dog owners may face. However, I did find the amount of information to sometimes be overwhelming; so much so that I've actually followed the advice from a smaller book more than this one. Yet, I'm pleased that I have this one in my library and do refer to it frequently. I would definitely recommend this book to any new dog owner.
Old Wine in New Bottle September 10, 2009 Sonic Sam (Boston, MA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Putting old, outdated methods on a DVD doesn't make them "new" again.
The ever present dog food company plugs were also quite annoying.
There are better choices out there see Patricia Mc Connell's publications.
