Product Description
Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing -- a safety gate that doesn't require any hands at all! But even though it's simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it's too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29" to 34" wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44" wide. The pressure-mounted design won't damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.

Amazon.com Product Description
Because of its simple "knee-knocker" mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it's secure again.

foot pedal
The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open.
The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate's vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side.

pressure mount
Adjustable pressure mounts don't require screws and won't mark up your walls.
Able to fit in standard doorframes (29" to 34" wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway.

Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

5 out of 5 stars Gate great for dogs too!!   November 15, 2009
Amy Brown (Mooresville, NC United States)
Our escape artist dachshund was able to climb over our previous mesh gate. With the vertical bars on this gate she has no choice but to stay in the laundry room. Gate was easy to setup. The top brackets must be tightened a lot to get the top latch to catch.

1 out of 5 stars Like the gate, but Amazon gets 1 star   November 13, 2009

I needed a gate for the top of the stairs, and searched Amazon for "baby gate top of stairs." This gate is the second item returned. Nowhere in the description does it say that this gate should not be used at the top of the stairs. Of course as soon as we opened the box the instructions clearly say DO NOT USE AT THE TOP OF STAIRS. The gate works great in the upstairs hallway, but we'll still need to buy a different gate at some point if we want the baby to have access to our room.

5 out of 5 stars Works great   November 9, 2009

Perfect for the where we needed it. As a high traffic area for carrying our son, we wanted something with a hands-free opening mechanism and the foot pedal/knee knock works great. It is also extendable but you need to buy the extension separately. More expensive than most pressure mounted gates but I guess that is for the hands-free operation.

5 out of 5 stars very secure   November 3, 2009

was a quick assembly. my doorway has a threshold so i didn't need the included ramp. took about 5 minutes to get it out of the box and in place in the doorway, including reading the instrucions. and then, since this was to keep my dog out of the kitchen and let the cats go where they want, i cut the center bar out with a sabre saw while the gate was in the doorway. of course i voided the warranty and i'm sure the manufacturer doesn't recommend doing that, but the gate didn't move at all while i was cutting. the modification took longer than assembling the gate in the first place and of course if you do this, wear gloves and eye protection. also, i adjusted it as tightly as possible before trying this. when you think you have it adjusted tightly, use the included square headed wrench to tighten it even more. not worth the risk not to

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gate   November 3, 2009
J. Cullen (Boston, MA)
The King of baby gates. I almost didn't buy this because consumer reports didn't rate it well especially on the safety dimension. I don't know what they were smoking, because this is an awesome baby gate. It is so easy to get through yet it is solid and kid proof. I was afraid that the little one would be able to depress the foot pedal. NOT SO. My one year old can't budge it. My three year old can move it a little, but not anywhere enough to open it. My six year old has to jump up and down on it a little, but can open it. For me, no handed operation is a dream come true. Perfect gate.
