Why LifeHammer
The demand for high-performance automobile safety equipment is on the rise, and Innovation Distributing's LifeHammer is fast becoming standard safety equipment in vehicles all across North America. The LifeHammer cuts through safety belts and smashes car windows with a single motion, allowing trapped passengers to quickly escape. Entrapment is a real threat to motorists. Last year, AAA estimated that more than 11,000 vehicles sank in canals, lakes or other waterways, resulting in 292 deaths - almost one per day. According to statistics gathered by the National Highway Safety Council, incidents of entrapment increased by 100% between 1995 and 1998. A potential factor is the growing prevalence of power windows that can become jammed due to submersion or fire.

Simple to Use
In the event of a life-threatening auto entrapment emergency, time is of the essence. That's why LifeHammer is designed with simplicity in mind. LifeHammer comes complete with a mounting bracket that both holds the tool securely in place and allows it to be mounted in your car within reach of the driver (professional mounting is recommended). In the event of entrapment in your vehicle just grab hold of the head of the LifeHammer, pulling it up and away from the mounting bracket. Use the razor-sharp blade to slice through your seat belt and swing the LifeHammer towards the side window to break the glass. The effectiveness of the blade is proven as a one-time use only, while the head can be reused many times, but should be inspected after every use.

German Craftsmanship and US Law Enforcement Approved
The LifeHammer was originally invented in Germany in 1983 and has been endorsed by European traffic safety organizations for over 15 years. Since Innovation Distributing launched the LifeHammer in North America in 1997, it has been tested and approved by the FBI and the United States Marshalls and is gaining rapid support from Public Safety Departments across the country. Compact, lightweight, and easy to use, the LifeHammer is an essential tool for preventing senseless fatalities due to accidental entrapment in a vehicle.

Features:

  • Double-sided head with hardened steel points shatters vehicle windows in an emergency.
  • Includes mounting bracket to hold LifeHammer in place within your vehicle console until needed.
  • Protected razor-sharp blade to cut through a seat belt and free trapped passenger.
  • Fluorescent button for easy retrieval in the dark.
  • Awarding-winning design is patented worldwide.

1 out of 5 stars I'm not impressed....but to be frank, I suppose I could be wrong...   November 18, 2009

..but I doubt it.

Got my LifeHammers today. They are disturbingly small and light; not something that gives me great confidence if wife or I needed to use them in an emergency. They couldn't weigh more than 2 or 3 ounces each with handle, and the "window shattering" cylinder at the top of the "hammer" is merely 2 1/2" long and 1/2" in diameter, pointed on both ends. Hey, I understand physics and high forces concentrated with little effort using a sharply pointed tool, but while I'm gonna keep them.... not sure if I/we are more safe than before.

BTW, The LifeHammer comes with a large plastic mount for supposedly 'easy' access that surely has built-in screwmounts for potentially self-drilled screw holes. Thankfully, if one carefully reads the instructions, this is *not* a LifeHammer recommended installation without professional installation to preclude original, pre-existing wiring damage to your vehicle. To that end, they recommend installing the 'mount' via velcro attachments (which are neither included or explained further) on the bottom end of a 'mount' that is pretty much concave with little flat surface area to accomplish any chance of a secure velcro attachment between the Hammer/mount and the vehicle floor, dash or any other surface.

We put our 2 LifeHammers in the console boxes between the two front seats... and hope to heck we never have to use them.

5 out of 5 stars Hope I never need to use it   November 16, 2009
David R. Ewoldsen (Columbus Ohio United States)
This is one of those purchases you hope you never have to use, but I've seen enough car wrecks that I wanted one for those instances when I need to help someone. I have helped people in two different wrecks where getting out of the seatbelt was extremely difficult. Fortunately, there was no need to rush (no immediate danger). But I want to be prepared. Several reviewers have complained about the size. It is plenty big and in emergency situations, you don't want anything too big to deal with - at least that is my experience. Plus if you are using it to cut seatbelts - you definitely want smaller.

5 out of 5 stars LifeHammer - Orange, Original - Seems Small & Perfect   November 15, 2009
Sara Joy (Florida, USA)
yes, I said small, but then again it appears to be capable of saving your life! After many reviews, we still agreed to purchase and hope it is never needed. Like prior mentioned, better to have and never use then to need and not have...makes sense to me. About where to store this emergency hammer seems a dilemma. Here in FLA the heat melts everything, including velcro-sticky backing. So where to keep it??? We have ours in our cars console. Maybe after awhile another suggestion will be useful to us, till then it remains close at hand bw driver & passenger. Thanks Amazon for having this product at a reasonable price. We caught segment on Dr.Oz, it scared us into thinking about getting this as part of our vehicles accessories. Glad we have it at hand now. :)

4 out of 5 stars Shatters glass great but wont cut too many seatbelts.   November 11, 2009

I recently took a vehicle extrication class. The window punch that was on the extrication truck would not work. I remembered having this. It broke countless windows with just one hit to the corner. (you always want to hit the corner of the windows)The plastic handle did get a little cut up but will still go through more windows. The seatbelt cutter only made It through 1 seatbelt, and now it has alot of seatbelt fibers on the blade.
I would advise when mounting this in your vehicle that you mount it by your middle dome light, in case the driver is knocked out, someone else can still get it. (-:
