Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a 20 lb. terri-poo that was a rescue from the pound, happy and healthy at 12 years old. He was recently diagnosed with a herniated disk, so I need assistance with keeping his hind end up since he has no coordination in his right rear leg.His leg drags and he falls a lot on smooth surfaces. I read the reviews, which were mixed, and thought maybe this item would work.
You can fashion the same type of effect with 2 leashes from the dollar store hooked together if needed. My dog's legs slipped out, I had to stoop over to walk him (short handle) even though it was padded it still did not work on my dog's hips. I suggest you save your money and search for a better item. I try to remain positive about things I purchase online, but this product just did not work, I do not see how it could work for any dog unless your dog has short legs and you are very, very short. I tried clipping another leash to the handle; that failed as well. [...]
which worked, it is simple and easy to make. You can extend the handles by sewing extra sleeves on it or hooking it to a leash. Yes,it is funny looking, but it was comfortable (the shirt I used was fleece) it will not bind or cut on the animal's legs, and it took 15 minutes to make, if that.
I will need to find another item that is professionally made as he gets worse, I just have not done the research yet.
I do not recommend this item at all, no matter what anyone else's reviews state. I was very disappointed. I am either going to return it or donate it to my vet's office so another animal might possibly get some use from it.
For those of you with a dog with back problems just fyi, my canine friend is on a steroid and tramadol(a pain killer analgesic) which has eased his pain and helped with his discomfort. It has been like this since July (4 months)and the meds helped a lot.
impossible to use September 5, 2009 Jayne L. Hawthorne (San Marcos CA) I had hoped it would work with my 45 lb Irish Setter and it was a circus. Very disappointed. Unless you have more than two arms you cannot keep this on the animal. Just falls off. Trying to adjust it after it is on does not work either. My dog can't stand for more than short periods of time and she kept sitting down and it would just fall off. She hated it and pretty much refused to even try when I had it on as well as I was able. I tried for awhile on a short walk and had to take it off to get her to go home. There was no way to be able to put the padding on it. She could not begin to stand there for all of that and I had to hold it taut in order to put the sleeve on. With only two hands, that is not possible either. What a waste.
Doesn't fit my dog June 26, 2009 M. Barbour We have a 140 pound Akita, and I cannot get this leash to go over his hips. Not one size fits all if you have a very large dog.
Bottom's Up Leash -- probably better for bigger dogs May 8, 2009 Brenda Carlson (Overland Park, KS, USA) Well made and simplistic, I can see how this would work plenty good on a larger dog, but I got it for my pug and it just seemed a little bulky around the legs for him. He's got such "chicken legs" (as well as skinny hips), and the padding around the leg straps was just so "fat". It might be better if this thing came in two sizes. True, since my pug is little, I can carry him wherever he needs to go, but he DOES like to get up and around by himself and I think the exercise is good for him. A somewhat smaller version of this item would have been better for my dog. Other than that, I think it's a great product.
Don't Buy Bottoms Up Leash February 6, 2009 Libra 23 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!! I have a dog with very little function in his back legs and needed this leash to get him up and down the stairs and to walk around. It DOES NOT work. The legs aren't adjustible and they just slide right off. It's hard to put on unless the dog is able to stand on its own. It lifts at the wrong angle causing the dog to lose it's balance. Don't waste your money, there are better products on the market than this.
