Geared for the non-fiction writer, but good for anyone new to the world of publishing December 27, 2008 Nathan Beauchamp (Oak Park, IL USA) I purchased this book because I intend to get something published some day. While I'm still working on that, it is not because this book failed in any way to educate me quite thoroughly on the process. From writing techniques to keep you one pace to tips on finding a good agent, this is a VERY detailed guide. Parts of it are redundant, but for someone completely new to the publishing world, it was very useful. I can easily recommend it to someone like myself who had little previous exposure to the material, but for someone whose already dipped their feet into publishing, the book might be too basic.
This is NOT a book to teach you how to write. It is intended to show you the ins and outs of getting a manuscript completed, finding an agent, sending unsolicited manuscripts to the proper markets, working with proofs, and ultimately hopefully collecting a check. If you want help with your writing skills, look elsewhere.
The majority of the book seems to be written for non-fiction authors. There is quite a bit of information on finding a topic to write about, how to gauge the market's receptivity to a new book on your topic, etc... Fiction writing is a bit of a different animal than non-fiction, and I would have appreciated less information on non-fiction and more on fiction, but to be fair to the author, this is a non-fiction book and so she is likely much more familiar with that topic.
Well written, informative, and extremely detailed, this book is very useful for anyone who wants to be published but doesn't have the first clue how to make that happen.
Straightforward, Practical, Excellent Advice July 9, 2007 Jessica Poundstone This book oriented me to the inner workings of the publishing world, helped me clarify what I wanted to do with my book idea, and provided a straightforward, practical set of steps to accomplish the goals I set for myself. My book proposal was accepted by an agent with high compliments on its quality.
It worked for me! March 22, 2007 Cheryl Charming (Florida) In 1997, I was trying to get a book published. I found this book and followed Susan's advice. It's now 2007 and my 7th book comes out this year.

A must read if you are wanting to write and publish a book.
THIS BOOK GOT ME PUBLISHED! September 12, 2006 M. Chase (Irvington, NY) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I never thought it would be possible to get published so quickly, but the guidance and insights in Susan Page's book allowed me to plan a clear path for my first book which was sold within 9 months. The Shortest Distance...is by far the best "how to get published" book on the market with concise, direct, generous and incredibly useful information. It even helps with promoting and publicizing your book once it's on the shelves. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a successful author!
